In North America, we are in the midst of a crisis: the crisis of criminalization. Criminalization and punishment are the default responses to conflict, harm and need. The current crisis of criminalization as it pertains to people of African descent is deeply rooted in the history of enslavement, colonialism and segregation of Black people in this country and across the globe. The current realities of criminalization and its negative impact on Black life are the product of political and policy decisions, and daily practices which can and must be challenged.
To create meaningful, lasting change for Black people to live safe, inclusive and expansive lives.
Through the use of research, policy, and advocacy,
the Project aims to:
More than half of Canada's Black population calls Ontario home; therefore, the Project will be based in Ontario to start and partner with Black-led groups and organizations nationwide.
The Project will form partnerships with Black communities, scholars, and institutes to leverage research to advance innovative solutions to criminal legal issues.
The Project will use Black-led research to propose new criminal law policies or
changes to existing laws,
policies and practices to address the criminalization and mass incarceration of
Black people.
The Project will use Black-led research as an advocacy tool inside and outside of the courtroom, spearheading campaigns and legal challenges focused on addressing the criminalization and mass incarceration of Black people.
